REHOMING NEWS - GYPSY

We hope that all our supporters are keeping safe in these strange times and that you and your pets are enjoying all this extra time together.

We were recently sent this from Gypsy's owner who rehomed a dog known as Roxy during her time with PAWS before being rehomed back in 2018.

She is a very clever girl and has only gone and come second in an online dog show and her new owners would like to share her success with all the PAWS supporters.

Well done Gypsy!

REHOMING NEWS - OSCAR

We are very pleased to report that Oscar has found and is settling right into his forever home in Cornwall. He is doing so well that he recently came 2nd in the rescue dog category of a local dog show! Well done Oscar and Oscar's new owners from all of us here at PAWS!

Thank you all for your continued support.

Family Friendly Dog Walks - Kenfig Nature Reserve

Range of dates available

Following on from the overwhelming success of last year's walks, we are pleased to announce new dates for this year's guided dog walks around Kenfig Nature Reserve.

This is not only a fantastic opportunity for your dogs to socialise but also a great way to meet other like-minded dog owners. Last year also offered the opportunity for prospective adopters to meet the dogs from kennels and see how they interact with people from all different ages and also with other dogs. It was a lovely opportunity for us to catch up with owners of dogs that they have adopted from PAWS in the past and for us to see how much they are thriving in their new homes.

Most of our walks ususally involve a visit to the beach and has allowed us to test the recall of our dogs from kennels to see how they react in the big wide world and is therefore a fantastic opportunity for us to learn more about the dogs we are rehoming in a less artificial setting than kennels or the exercise field.

We ask for a £3 donation per family to include as many dogs and family members as you wish. Due to the geography of Kenfig Nature Reserve, participants should be reasonably fit and we advise that you wear flat walking shoes or trainers.  We look foward to seeing you. It is envisaged that each walk will last approx 90 minutes.

Thank you to all who turned out for our 5th PAWS dog walk this year. These walks are becoming quite a success thanks to all our supporters!

A great time was had by all, especially our own Harry Houdini, Oscar, who got loose from his lead and went on a little adventure of his own. Well done to Tom and Stewart for capturing him and twarting his escapologist antics!

Our next walk will take place on the 8th August and we look forward to seeing you all there!

22.01.2015 Microchipping for all dogs in Wales by March 2015

New laws in force mean that all dogs will need to be microchipped by March 2015.

A microchip is a small device, about the size of a grain of rice, which lives under your dog’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. the chip is inserted using a needle in between your dog’s shoulder blades. It doesn’t hurt and the chip is encased in the same material as is used to protect pacemakers in humans and will, over time, be surrounded by your dog’s tissue, thereby holding it in place. If the chip does slip a little it won’t move into your dog’s body, as it sits in between the layers of skin, and it can still be scanned. If your dog runs away or gets stolen the chip can easily be scanned by a Vet or a local animal shelter and you have a much greater chance of being reuinted with your pet if they are micro chipped.

Please click here to read more for how this legislation affects you and your dog.

November 2014 Our Autumn Newsletter

Another Year is coming to a conclusion. Ahead are the winter months and a difficult time for animals in our community and a busy time for us in Porthcawl to ensure we are able to care for the unwanted and needy animals particularly the dogs and cats.

The Society have had a very eventful year. We, as many voluntary organisations, have been affected by the changes in society with a reduction in income and rising costs This has required us to look at our PAWS activities and costs and monies coming into the Society. We have been lucky in the past to receive monies from Blue Cross and a number of bequests which has meant that over the last five years we have been able to maintain 10 kennels, high vets bills and a field to walk and train the dogs. Like all good things we have had to look at what monies we have and what we can expect in future.

The Society it determined to continue but we need to be more circumspect at what we are able to afford. We are very pleased at the efforts and activities of the shop we have in Lias road.We have recently moved the shop a few doors down the road. It is very successful and provides us with a steady income. We are sorry that Pat Evans decided to retire in August. We had a farewell for Pat in the shop and gave her an Ewenny cat ornament as a momento for all the years as secretary and working in the shop.

We have a very able team in the shop and Siew Davies now heads up the team. Andrew Collier assisted by Jan Davies and a small committee to raise funds.

The Owen Money evening in the Hi Tide was very enjoyable and successful raising over £800. We are planning a dogwalk, treasure hunt, a quiz and future entertainment. Details will be posted on the website so keep checking back for updates.

As mentioned earlier, we have had to look at the services we can provide. We have had to reduce our kennels from ten to five and reduce the dog walkers also by 50% which meant that we had to lose Fay Thomas, who was a valuable member of staff, and reduce the hours of Helga Collier. However, we still care for the dogs and Pauline ensures that the dogs are well cared for and is keeping a tight rein on the vets bills so we can continue to care for the animals in need.

The committee has continued with Angela as Chairperson, Pauline as Deputy Chairperson and David as Treasurer. Christine has now become Secretary and Siew has now become the member responsible for the shop. Andrew is now responsible for fund raising and Jan now assists Siew in the shop, particularly with the books.

We are very proud that the Society, shop and activies are run on a voluntary basis with no paid staff except for a part time dogwalker.

We welcome any support, volunteers, new members, and continuing support from members. We also welcome any bequests and donations for the shop.

The Society wishes you a healthy and happy 2015

Regards

Christine Court Secretary

On behalf of Porthcawl Animal Welfare Society
